In DC there is always so much to do and take advantage of but in
the process of all the fun experiences the money spent adds up really quickly.
Here are some tips specifically for WAIP fellows, but that can also be used by
anyone in the city for a significant amount of time.
1. Make new friends
With new
friends comes new and sometimes free opportunity. You get someone to hang out
with and maybe also a pool to use, and also access to their contacts and events.
2. Attend meetings, briefings, and events
There are so
many business/networking events that offer free breakfast, lunch and sometimes
even dinner. Let your boss know you would be happy to attend a briefing or
panel they can’t because you gain knowledge, contacts, brownie points, and
possibly lunch. With all of the different groups in DC you can find something feeds
your mind and your stomach.
3. Metro, Uber, Relay Rides and More!
Not having a
car in DC saves a lot of money in DC but also know your options for transportation. The metro is extremely convenient but realize that if you have
to ride it to work it can also become extremely expensive. Be willing to leave early to walk places that
are a little further to save some money. You can also use Uber. It can become a
cheap resource if there isn’t a surge or if your sharing it with others. If you
want to go on a short trip look into Relay Rides where you use someone else’s car and pay a flat fee and fill the gas tank. Many times this can be cheaper than using a rental car and it allows more freedom for trips.
4.Utilize Groupon
Repeat after me
Groupon is your friend. When you arrive take some time to look for deals
through the website. Everyone wants take in experiences in DC from concerts, festivals,
sports, to restaurants. Many times companies have discounts on groupon for events
and places we attend anyway, so why not pay less money? Multiple kayaking and
other water sports companies have offered discounted tickets, as well as
concerts, museums, comedy shows, and more. Take advantage!
There are so many other ways to save money so at the end of your
stay you can splurge or be satisfied you didn’t bankrupt yourself.
