Yo si le voy, le voy a Columbus!

As an Ohio State student, I have the privilege to go watch the Columbus Crew play at Crew Stadium whenever I want. I have also been able to witness the U.S. Men’s National Team beat Mexico 2-0 in Columbus. But few soccer experiences will compare to watching the reigning World Cup (and UEFA) champions in their final send-off before this year’s World Cup in Brazil. This weekend, I got to do just that, before watching the Crew take on rival D.C. United at FedEx Field.

Three of us took the metro to the Redskins stadium, along with hundreds of other soccer fans, to watch Spain play El Salvador in a pre-World Cup friendly. We were seated in a sea of passionate El Salvador fans and I was almost tempted to root for the underdog, but I couldn’t deny the thrill of watching Spain’s precise passing and David Villa’s two goals.
After the international match, the stadium mainly cleared out so that we were able to move down to closer seats to sit with some other Crew fans for the MLS game. We cheered and chanted for 90+ minutes and mostly refrained from engaging in trash talk with the DC fans. Thanks to Steve Clark’s awesome save of a penalty in stoppage time, the game ended in a 0-0 tie and we were able to leave the stadium without having to endure any taunts from DC fans.

Living in DC is an absolute blast and the awesome sporting opportunities are just one of the perks!
