The Folger Shakespeare Library
The Folger Shakespeare Library was opened by Henry Clay Folger and his wife, Emily Jordan Folger in 1932. Both were fascinated by Shakespeare in 1879 and tried to acquire a vast array of Shakespearean materials. Over time, the Folger collection has continuted to grow. Today, its two great strenths are materials related to the entire early modern age in the West, from about 1450 to the mid-1700s, and materials related to Shakespeare and the theater, up to the present day. The Folger's collection of Shakespeare materials remains the largest and finest in the world. The Folger holds approximately 316,000 books and manuscripts; 50,000 paintings, drawings, engravings, prints, and photographs; and such diverse other holdings as sculptures, antique furniture.
