Shake Shack Milkshake Rankings

Research conducted by: Nikki Tecco

This blog post was made possible through Shake Shack's 6th Annual Great American Shake Sale benefiting No Kid Hungry. I would like to thank Katy Hogan for constantly supporting and encouraging my efforts throughout the summer. The milkshake rankings were evaluated per "Policy Criteria" and on a numerical scale.

Policy Criteria:
  • Straw flow consistency (thick, medium, thin)
  • Whipped cream contribution/influence (high, medium, low)
  • Flavor (rich, balanced, underwhelming)
Scale:
  • 1: I would never order it again.
  • 5: I would probably order it again.
  • 10: I would order this 24/7 if I could.

The Official Rankings:

9. Fair Coffee: The entire shake was rather underwhelming for a coffee lover like myself. I would prefer the calories of a Java Chip Frappuccino than suffer through this bland disappointment again.
Thin, high, underwhelming
Recommended for those who want to lose $5.
(3/10)

8. Salted Caramel: The shake had a good consistency. The flavor was true to its title and tasted like salted caramel candies. The whipped cream also added to the excitement, but it was overall too rich for me.
Medium, medium, rich
Recommended for those who wish they could eat a bag of melted caramel chews.
(3.25/10)

7. Brownie Batter: The sprinkles were exciting, but the flavor was too rich. It was like a carnival that advertised too much and ended up being a letdown.
Medium, high, rich
Recommended for those who wish to drink brownie batter instead of waiting for the actual brownies to be ready.
(3.5/10)

6. Peanut Butter: The shake had an overwhelmingly thick consistency and the flavor was not strong enough. Sadly, the fact that it did not have whipped cream may have contributed to the underwhelming flavor.
High, medium, rich
Recommended for any classic lovers of peanut butter, such as your golden retriever.
(4/10)

5. Vanilla: It was a classic vanilla bean shake. It would have been melted ice cream without the whipped cream on top.
Medium, high, balanced
Recommended for those who enjoy a good Wendy's vanilla frosty.
(4.5/10)

4. Black and White: Although a little rich, the fudge was a nice surprise. The whipped cream definitely contributed to the overall rating of the shake.
Medium, high, rich
Recommended for those who are adventurous enough to order it and have the sweet tooth to tolerate it.
(6/10)

3. Chocolate: This was an old-fashioned chocolate shake. I enjoyed the flavor the entire time and the recipe has potential to be worthy of being stolen by Hershey's.
Medium, medium, balanced
Recommended for those with an urgent chocolate craving.
(7.5/10)

2. Strawberry: I ordered this shake with no whipped cream so it was clearly delicious. The flavor was not overwhelmingly artificial.
Medium, low, balanced
Recommended for those who enjoy a classic signature shake.
(8/10)

1. Red Velvet: I have never personally ordered this shake. Therefore, its captivating flavor via a few sips each week guarantee you that it’s a hit. It tastes like a red velvet cupcake in a to-go cup.
Medium, low, balanced
Recommended for all.
(9/10)
