When I was getting ready to make the move to Washington D.C., I started getting nervous. It was a big city with a big change. On the 7 hour drive from Ohio to Washington, all I could think about was the big change I was about to endure; new people, new job, new place. After living here for a month, I now realize that even though Washington D.C. is intimidating and big, it’s still all about the little things. In this aspect, being a student at Ohio State and an Intern in Washington D.C. aren’t that different. The stakes are higher and the circumstances are different but it’s still all about the little things. Back on campus, an e-mail that says our 8 a.m. class is cancelled will make our entire day. In an office in Washington D.C., a pot of fresh coffee that took you two minutes to make will make all of your co-workers day and will help them remember your name.
You don’t want to be the intern that thinks he’s going to be President when the internship is over. Just like you want the boyfriend or girlfriend that remembers to text you good morning and buys you flowers on your birthday, you want to be the intern that remembers the newspapers, makes the best coffee, and smiles every time the phone rings. The small things add up and they pay big when someone in your office remembers you made the best coffee in the world and organized the newspapers without complaint and decides to invite you to The White House.
This is me at the White House (After making a really good pot of coffee) |
